Named after Napoleon’s home in exile, Longwood was built in 1818 for Dr. Gustavus Warfield, son of Major Charles Warfield (a participate in the burning of the Peggy Stewart). Dr Warfield practiced medicine at Longwood and because he would keep very ill patients there overnight it has often been called “the first hospital in Howard County” The house is bounded by the original stone smokehouse and a small log cabin, a stone cottage and a barn. The Warfield family cemetery, where Gustavus, his wife Mary, most of their nine children, their spouses and other relatives rest is just south of the house in a grove of trees. There are also some slaves buried nearby.
The Warfields of Maryland have been among the foremost families of importance since Colonial Times, having contributed to the medical, civil and military life of the colony and the state. Longwood remained in the Warfield family until 1964, when it was purchased by C. Oliver Goldsmith. It was later sold to Al Smith who did a major renovation and restoration. The likelihood of archeological remains at Longwood is very high since the property has seen little disturbance over the years, The smokehouse is the only survivor of the early 19 th century domestic outbuildings. Slave quarters did not survive although the Warfields did own slaves.
It has since been sold to the County and in April 2024 plans were announced to open Howard County’s destination Public Garden at Longwood. Longwood is located at 3188 Roxbury Mills Rd (MD97) Glenwood, MD. Longwood is listed as a Maryland Historical Trust Property. The show house was held from September 24 to October 23. The chairmen were Lorna Ozgun and Lissa Stolte. About 7500 people attended.
